Mothers and their babies are tear gassed in new migrant uprising in Greece: Hundreds storm Greek train station and clash with cops at border as they try to reopen a land route to Germany in revolt fuelled by social media.
Small groups of people including children arrived at a field next to the migrant camp of Diavata near the border with North Macedonia on Thursday. By Friday morning there were more than 100 tents pitched in the field, prompted by reports on social media of plans for an organised movement to cross Greece's northwest land border with Albania in early April. In Athens, a group of about 50 migrants squatted on the tracks of the capital's main railway station shouting 'Germany!' and 'Open the borders.' Several more were at the station under heavy police presence.
Die sogenannte "Balkanroute" war auf Initiative des damaligen österreichischen Außenministers Sebastian Kurz auf der am 24.2.2016 in Wien tagenden "Westbalkankonferenz" geschlossen worden, Slowenien, Kroatien, Serbien, Bosnien, Montenegro, Kosovo, Albanien, Mazedonien und Bulgarien nahmen daran teil und schlossen wie von Österreich gestartet jeweils auch ihre Südgrenzen. Anfang April 2019 war unter den in Griechenland gelandeten Migranten im Internet das Gerücht verbreitet worden, die Balkanroute wäre wieder offen, sie ist jedoch immer noch zu, in den Medien Österreichs und Deutschlands war über dieses Geschehen in Griechenland bisher außer in der Kronenzeitung eher nichts zu finden...
